While there are many ways to tweak your e-juice to fit your personal preferences, there are some better and worse ways to do so. For example, adding tons and tons of vegetable glycerin to your e-liquid to enhance how much vapor it produces might work out - but it probably won’t. Too much VG would make the liquid way too viscous, and completely mess up the flavor of the liquid. Another fine example of this is adjusting the nicotine level.
If you came into vaping through traditional smoking, then you probably remember looking at your first e-juice and wondering what the proper nicotine concentration was. Would the highest level even be high enough for you, or would it be too high? There’s a large chance that you did indeed pick that highest concentration, and immediately came to regret that decision. It is somewhat shocking how concentrated some liquids are with their nicotine. Fortunately, there is a proper way to lower your nicotine levels - and to raise them, if need be.
The first thing you need to do is buy yourself some propylene glycol (PG) or vegetable glycerin (VG). These two compounds are commonly referred to as diluents, and act as bases for all e-juices. PG is usually the more commonly used diluent. It is lighter and less viscous, and provides a decent throat hit. VG is more viscous and produces more vapor. It also provides a sweeter flavor. Regardless of which you choose, make sure that it is food grade quality. Your local superstore may have non-food grade VG and PG, sold for use in mixing various types of lotions or other creams. While this is still safe, it isn’t intended for ingestion. You may have to look in different places for food grade VG or PG, but it's essential to obtain it.
Depending on your goal, you may want to order some liquid nicotine as well. You probably will not find this in a store (except for your local smoke shop), but it is easily purchasable online. To go along with this purchase, you’ll also want gloves. Nicotine can be absorbed through the skin and having too much nicotine in your system can lead to some pretty nasty side effects. There are some specific equations for how much nicotine to add to certain amounts of e-liquid with an already present concentration that can be easily found online.
One thing to keep in mind when diluting or raising nicotine levels in your e-juice is how much the liquid’s flavor will be affected. If you dilute your e-liquid with PG or VG, the flavor will also be diluted. This is because flavors are derived from specific chemical compounds, and the concentration of those compounds determines how much of that flavor you experience at a given time. By adding more diluent, you decrease how much of the compound you will receive with each pull, thereby also decreasing how much flavor you will experience per pull. While adding liquid nicotine doesn’t dilute the flavor as much (as you’re not adding nearly as much nicotine), the actual flavor of the nicotine can overpower the e-liquid’s inherent flavor.
Properly lowering and raising nicotine levels can be a little bit tricky, but once you get it down it’s extremely easy. Just make sure you purchase the correct ingredients and you’re good to go!
